Find and use sources of local and national news including newspapers, websites, library databases, and more.

Use an Internet Search Engine

You can search for local news using Google or Duck Duck Go.

In your search, include:

  • Words about the topic you are searching
  • The name of the town, city, or neighborhood (e.g. Rochester)
  • NY
  • The word news

Example searches

  • school lunches (the topic)
  • Rochester (the city)
  • NY
  • The word news

Use Advanced Searching to "Site Search" on Google or Duck Duck Go

You can use advanced searching syntax to search an entire website for mention of a particular topic or phrase.

Visit Google or Duck Duck Go and use site: in your search string.

Example: Search WDKX website for news about school boards

Enter this search string into either Duck Duck Go or Google:

site:wdkx.com “school board”

You can use the “Wikipedia trick” to evaluate news stories from sources you don’t recognize.
