Educational Technology EDUC204 and the SIFT Method

Learning Objectives, F - find better coverage

Through this library session, students will learn to:

  • determine the original source of an aggregated news piece.
  • verify the news sources for both factual accuracy and tone.
  • devise a plan for how to use news sources in a classroom setting.

Get Started on 'F' -- Find better coverage

Skim through the article linked below.

While Vulture is the source of this article, let's see if we can find a better source on this same news story.

Answer this:

What is the original reporting source of the content the Vulture article refers to?

Take it a step further... which coverage is better?

Once you've found the original source of the information in the article linked above, let's investigate both sources to figure out which we consider to be better coverage.

Investigate the two sources now.

Remember there are two quick ways to investigate a source (the 'I' portion of the SIFT method):

  • Google the source and see what others say about it
  • Use the Wikipedia trick by adding a space after the source's main URL and the word Wikipedia

Come to a conclusion:

Which of the two sources (Vulture or CBC.ca) do you consider to be 'better' coverage? Why?

Why find the original source?

Think and reflect:

Why is it worth taking the time and effort to find the original context of information found online?

How might you know when it's worth taking the time to find better coverage or investigate if something is trustworthy?
