Faculty Toolkit: Library Support for CORE 3990

Overview

About Library 3990 Essentials (New in fall 2024)

screenshot of the Library 3990 Essentials mini course

  • This is a self-enroll mini course in Brightspace.
  • It is self-paced, and takes 45-60 minutes to complete.
  • It walks students through searching for, evaluating, and citing articles on their research topic.

For in-person (seated) sections of 3990

Your librarian will help your students self-enroll in Library 3990 Essentials during their brief introduction visit a few weeks before the class session. Students will complete this mini course before the librarian class session in order to find a scholarly journal article for their topic and earn a Certificate of Completion.

You choose: students can complete this as homework, or you can choose to provide in-class time. It takes 45-60 minutes to complete.

For online sections

The library support for online sections is comprised of two library modules, and students will complete Library 3990 Essentials in Module 1

Why This New Component for 3990 Library Support?

  • We heard from 3990 faculty that students need a research refresher. (It’s been a while since they took 1299 Research-Based Writing.)
  • Transfer students need an orientation to scholarly sources at Fisher. Since most of them did not take the 1299 Research-Based Writing course, faculty report that transfer students need extra support.
